While Raft’s founder was previously on the leadership team of Open Collective - see below - his present formal relationship with Open Collective is only through Raft Foundation.

Raft’s relationship with Open Collective is in two forms:

  1. Paying OFi Technologies, the operator or Open Collective, for the use of the platform
  2. Membership in general assembly of OFi Consortium (a.k.a. OFiCo), a 501(c)(6) nonprofit that owns OFi Technologies and governs the platform’s leadership

Fees to Open Collective

Fees to Open Collective are paid by Raft.1 Any payment processor fees you see on transaction receipts go to Stripe or Wise, not Raft or Open Collective.

Membership to OFi Consortium

Raft Foundation is a member of OFi Consortium, the nonprofit that owns OFi Technologies, which in turn runs Open Collective. This allows us to have a stronger voice in their decision making, although that does not mean we always get what we want. For this privilege, we pay a membership fee, alongside several other fiscal hosts around the world.

Nathan’s past work with Open Collective

Nathan Hewitt, founder of Raft Foundation, was previously COO and Operations Strategist for Open Collective from March 2023 to April 2024. Before leaving the organization, he laid the groundwork for the platform to be transferred to nonprofit ownership in the fall of 2024.

Nathan was also previously on the team of Open Collective Foundation, an independent US charitable organization that used Open Collective, but that decided to close its doors. He left that team at the end of February 2023, and they announced their closure at the end of February 2024.

Although Nathan is still friends with members of Open Collective’s team, he has no financial interest in Open Collective or OFiCo and owns no part of the platform or any company associated with it. Reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
