How we work

See the Fiscal Sponsorship section of our website for information on our program.

For your review

Please review our eligibility, cost structure, and template agreements below before reaching out.

Eligibility

We welcome an introductory conversation with any and all projects that align with our organizational values, do not match anything on our ineligible list, and fit within one of the four program areas on our website’s home page.

Only reviewing budgets of $150k or more

From January 28 to May 31, 2026, Raft Foundation will only review applications for new projects with an annual budget of $150,000 or more. Read more about our reasoning here.

See our website’s fiscal sponsorship page for more information.

Cost structure

We prefer the term “administrative cost allocations” to “fees.” See this section of our website for more information on our overall costs.

Other costs

Stripe (and other credit card payment processing) fees are tracked debited from the project’s balance automatically on Open Collective. The same is true for expense payout fees, through Wise (typically $1.13 for domestic expenses, varies internationally).

Check donation processing costs us $6 per check and ~$4.50 per batch, but we currently cover those costs ourselves. Other costs will be discussed in advance to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Application, review, and onboarding process

The review process is as follows:

  1. Preliminary discussions, if desired
  2. Application at apply.raft.foundation
  3. If not already completed in step 1, a meeting between the project and the Raft team
  4. Review and approval of application by Raft board of directors
  5. Final review of agreement by project and confirmation of who will serve as Prorject Lead or Project Committee
  6. Raft and project sign agreement
  7. Project lead(s) “apply” to Raft on Open Collective1 and Raft “approves”2
  8. Project lead(s) given access to private member documentation
  9. Onboarding call with overview of documentation and Open Collective
  10. Later, once General Liability insurance is added for the project, and in consultation with the project lead(s) on timing, insurance fee is charged (usually $300 or less).
